Referee whistles directing the flow of a game, basketball sneakers squeaking at the change of a player’s direction.
The town of Murray congregated in the CFSB Center Thursday night to celebrate the first sign of life for basketball season: Racer Mania.
Die hard Racer fans filled the CFSB Center with excitement as the start basketball season has finally come.
Racer Mania is the starting gate of basketball season for Racer fans. The teams kick the night off with an intrasquad scrimmage. Then the department hosts a dunk contest with players and fraternity members showcasing their skills. At the end of the night players gather to sign autographs, take pictures and maybe play a game or two with the kids.
Voice of the Racers Neal Bradley has been representing the team for over 20 years. Bradley always looks forward to the creativity of the dunk contest.
“On Racer Mania I always like the dunk contest,” voice of the Racers,” Bradley said. “Last year, I think was fabulous with Demarcus Croaker’s dunks, those are my favorite.”
For the men’s and women’s basketball teams, Racer Mania is that breath of fresh air before the regular season starts. To put on a show for the crowd while also showing off their skills to let the fans see what the upcoming season will look like.
“It’s just been a great experience,” Racer fan, Laura Lohr, said. “I look so forward to basketball season every year.”
The Racers will kick off their season on November 2, when the women’s basketball team will face Georgetown College at 5 p.m. The men’s basketball team will play at 7 p.m. against McKendree College.
